Are Cottage Rentals Worth It in Ontario?

Due to the controversies started by people who booked rentals online and found out that the accommodation doesn’t even exist when they got there, there has been quite a debate whether rentals are worth it. There have been indeed a few isolate cases, but that shouldn’t make tourists doubt all owners. As a matter of fact, if you’re a bit careful, you’ll never be scammed by fake ads.

For example, Ontario, Canada has plenty of cottage rentals that offer a trustworthy and inexpensive way to spend the vacation. Many hospitality companies are trying to make booking rentals more reliable and to be able to compete directly with well-known hotels. They bet also on the fact that these rentals, especially cottages, imply a lower cost and offer a particular appeal.

When you want to book something, it’s of course ideal to go in a safe place that you already know. But renting directly is quite difficult when you’re miles away, so you have to try online booking. You can either find agencies that have on-site support and pre-established holiday opportunities or look for “peer-to-peer” sites that connect owners and guests.

It’s obviously harder to fake you have a hotel, as hotels are usually well-known and easy to spot. If you study the map and reviews from past renters, you should easily notice if the accommodation is for real. Just add the address on the satellite view on Google Maps and see the area. In this way you can also detect eventual misleading terms. For example, if the owner claims the beach is nearby but it’s actually very far away. Google Maps allows you to see attractions of the area. Wandering around can help you detect the good and the bad such as nice parks and playgrounds or noisy factories and railways.

It’s compulsory to call. Anytime you rent from a private owner, you should have a phone conversation where you can double-check the details specified on the site and see whether the property is a good match or not. If you don’t live in Canada and you’d rather send a mail, watch out for red flags. If you don’t get a reply promptly, you should check out another cottage rental. A good owner takes good care of business and replies fast to existent or future clients. Also, try to book your rental quite close to the vacation dates. Still, don’t push it as it can be indeed challenging to find the best cottage rentals in Ontario on a very short notice.

Beach House Update: Making a Tybee Cottage from a House Built in the 90’s

The pressed board cabinets with vinyl covering would never last in a house with our family, so we picked solid wood cabinets with sturdy hardware that can stand plenty of use to replace them.  I chose to leave the kitchen island unfinished to paint blue, and the gray floors proved to be challenge to blend with my color.  It remains unpainted as the room gets created around it, so that I won’t make a bad choice!

The countertops are granite, so that there won’t be any problems with cleaning.  I took fabric printed with the coastal map of the area and covered the seats of the old chairs from the previous kitchen.

The most important part to the remodeling for vintage feel was the ceiling.  We rid ourselves of the popcorn by covering the surface with beadboard sheets from Home Depot and created faux beams to cross the area.  Recessed lighting helped the house develop an airy feel, and a ceiling fan was installed to combat the airflow issues with the vaulted ceiling.

I used beautiful clear glass lighting in the hall to show off the Edison-style bulb.

The back porch is coming along nicely.  I am creating an ocean-themed mosaic for the old steel table rescued from my sister’s backyard.  We painted the frames turquoise.  Spray painting is much harder than it looks.  You have to be careful to keep moving to avoid the drips.

By far, the most exciting addition is the vintage Coke machine!  I was able to get a wonderful price on Ebay for the machine, but shipping it to the house was a challenge.  I used a suggested website to have companies bid on the price to deliver the machine, but it ended up having about $150.00 extra expense past the forecasted amount.  Regardless, it arrived in one piece and keeps the drinks cold.

The lights at the front of the house have been replaced with barn lights and nautical style sconces.  They aren’t being used until I find some sea turtle friendly light bulbs.  During the summer, extra lights from the beach area will confuse the turtles as they hatch from the nest.  They use the natural light on the horizon to find their way to the ocean at night.  Light bulbs created in the amber or red spectrum aren’t seen as well by turtle’s eyes.  Blue, ultraviolet and green spectrum lighting is very disrupting, though, so until the other bulbs are ordered, it is lights out!

This Coastal Life

When we purchased this beach house, it was nicely maintained and well-constructed.  However, it absolutely was an example of decorating style of the 1990’s.  Despite being a beach home, there was carpet in all of the rooms and the color scheme was different varieties of country blue. The effect was a dark house, with no thoughts of the airiness of a vacation home by the water.

   IMG_4689     IMG_3604

The first order of business was to rip up the carpeting.  We chose an inexpensive pine, unfinished floor and had it professionally installed.  I chose a new color of stain with a driftwood finish, which was a ton more gray than I expected.  When it weathers, it will be beautiful, but it was shocking how quickly the house looked dark again.

A Cottage Lawn

Leave the lawn to itself for a few minutes and it becomes a field of wildflowers! The first crop of dandelions is in. Clover, plantain, violets, fleabane and a vast of array of unknown (yet to me) wild flora make up the green green ‘grass’ of the cottage lawn/yard/pasture. Fortunately, I like them all, some are of medicinal use (dandelion, plantain and more), and all are attractive to bees and pollinators if allowed to flower.  I don’t consider the variety of non-grass plants weeds at all.  However, the lawn is being cut while I’m away–otherwise nature would take its course and a bush hog or other heavy equipment would be needed. There are some actual grasses in the mix, as well.
